pig farming: a sick industry
Picture
Farmwatch has carried out its first hidden-camera investigation on a pig farm in Auckland.

Disturbing images were seen of farm workers kicking and punching piglets as they screamed in a frenzied panic. Pigs were picked up by their back legs, thrown and dragged. After a relentless display of cowardly brutality by farm workers, a piglet is seen lying on the ground seemingly near death as a result of being crushed.

Other heart-breaking footage shows a sow (female pig) being beaten to death by repeated blows to her head in a prolonged attack that lasts for over an hour. Click on the video above to see what we uncovered.

Despite Farmwatch’s initial plan for a much longer investigation, the footage was handed to the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), due to the seriousness of the abuse.

Disturbingly, we have since learned that a lot of the practices in this footage are acceptable industry standard.

As Farmwatch digs deeper into pig farming, it becomes increasingly clear that this type of cruelty is inherent throughout the industry. NZ Pork and MPI can no longer continue to deny this. These animals are being failed by the industry, the authorities, the legislators, but most of all by a society that insists on keeping them on their plates.

These animals can’t wait any longer. Pigs on farms will continue to suffer until we demand that it stops. Factory farming must end.
